Red Hejazi (Medina) Ithmid Kohl- اثمد كحل حجازي احمر

Hejaz (Hijaz) is the region in Saudi Arabia encompassing Mecca, Medina, and Jeddah. Surrounded by mountains and valleys, the region is rich in mineral deposits — including the ithmid rocks from which Hejazi ithmid kohl is made.

Two Types of Hejazi Ithmid Kohl

• Black Ithmid kohl
• Red Ithmid kohl

Although referred to as red, the colour is closer to a light burgundy. It looks similar to Isfahani ithmid kohl to the untrained eye, but is slightly lighter in shade.

Red vs Black Hejazi Ithmid Kohl

Both types are genuine ithmid kohl and carry all the benefits mentioned in the Sunnah. Both originate from the Hijaz region of Saudi Arabia.

The key difference is that the red type is significantly lighter in weight and, once ground into powder, is smoother and finer than the black variety. This makes it potentially better suited for people with sensitive eyes.

These characteristics arise partly from the red type containing fewer impurities, and partly from slight differences in mineral chemistry — it is well established in geology that the same rock type can vary in chemical composition depending on location and surrounding environment.

Using Ithmid Kohl

• The Sunnah is to apply ithmid kohl an odd number of times in each eye, ideally 3 times. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: "If anybody amongst you applies Kohl (in his eye), he has to do that in odd numbers." (Reported by Ahmad; authenticated by Al-Albani)
• Ibn Abbas (Radiya Allahu Anhuma) narrated in Sunan Ibn Majah: "The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) used to have a Kohl container and used to apply Kohl 3 times in each eye."
• It is best applied before sleep, as was the common practice of the Prophet. This allows for maximum absorption and benefit while the eyes are closed and resting.
• Women may also apply it during the day as a natural mascara or eyeliner for beautification, while being mindful of scholarly guidance regarding modesty in public.
